Venue Overview:

Location & Type: Nestled in the heart of Amesbury (just a stone’s throw from Salisbury and the famous Stonehenge), Antrobus House is a historic country house wedding venue. The address is 39 Salisbury Rd, Amesbury, Salisbury SP4 7HH, and it’s conveniently close to the A303 for easy access. Despite its town-center location, the venue feels like a secluded estate once you’re inside the gates. It’s Amesbury’s only Grade II listed, Queen Anne-style mansion built specifically for community gatherings and celebrations​.

In fact, it was constructed in 1924-1925 as a memorial gift from Lady Florence Antrobus to honor her son, Lieutenant Edmund Antrobus, who fell in WWI​

That heritage gives the house a heartwarming legacy – every wedding here becomes part of a century-long story of love, remembrance, and community.

Architecture & Features: Pulling up to Antrobus House, you’ll notice the elegant symmetry of its red-brick facade, tall chimneys, and the little ship weathervane atop the central dome (a nod to its 1920s origins). The building is early Georgian in style, with a grand central hall and two side wings. Step through the stone arch doorway and you’re greeted by classic features: high ceilings with exposed cross-beams, oak-paneled walls, and gleaming parquet floors in the main hall​. Thanks to a major refurbishment in 2019, everything feels fresh and well-maintained (new heating, lighting, kitchen, etc.) without losing the historic character.

The Verey Room – Your Light-Filled Getting Ready Spot

Just off the Lady Florence Room sits the Verey Room – a cosy, private space that’s ideal for getting ready before the ceremony. It’s far enough from the main area to give you a bit of calm, but still close enough that you’re not missing out on what’s going on. A lot of brides love using this room for prep – especially if you want to get ready on-site. It keeps the day relaxed and means no stressful running around between locations.

From my perspective as a photographer, this room is a dream. It has beautiful natural light pouring in from three sides, which means I don’t need to use any artificial lighting – no flashes, no lamps. That allows me to work quietly and stay in the background while you enjoy the moment.

Upstairs, right at the top of the grand staircase, you’ll find the Lady Florence Room – a beautifully bright and airy space that’s perfect for saying your vows. With windows on multiple sides, the natural light in here is just incredible. Soft, flattering, and ideal for capturing those emotional “I do” moments without needing any fancy lighting tricks.

This is the main licensed ceremony room at Antrobus House, and it’s often set up with a classic aisle – so yes, that walk down the aisle moment? Totally happening here. It fits around 100 guests, so it strikes a nice balance: intimate, but still with room to breathe. After the ceremony, the space can easily be transformed into a chill-out area, a lounge, or even a play zone for kids – super practical if you’ve got families attending.

One thing to keep in mind: it’s on the first floor and there’s no lift, so if you have guests with mobility needs, it’s worth planning ahead to make sure they can get the help they need.

Edmund Hall – Where the Celebration Comes to Life

Downstairs at Antrobus House, you’ll find the heart of the party: Edmund Hall. This is where the magic happens after the “I do’s” – dining, dancing, and all those unforgettable moments with your guests. Named in honour of fallen soldier Edmund, the space has a warm, timeless vibe thanks to the rich wood paneling, classic chandeliers, and massive windows that let in loads of natural light. During the day, it feels airy and elegant – a dream setting for photos. And when the sun goes down? The room transforms with your décor, fairy lights, or even a live band on the built-in stage.

There’s space for up to 100 guests for dinner and up to 150 for the evening reception. And with double doors that open out to both the front lawn and the rear terrace, the indoor-outdoor flow is perfect for those warmer days when people want to mingle in the sunshine.

Out front, you’ve got this gorgeous double-lawn setup with neatly trimmed hedges and colourful flowerbeds – and that iconic red-brick facade as your backdrop. This is usually where guests gather for drinks after the ceremony. Picture this: your friends clinking glasses, live guitar music in the background, the sun shining… and all of it turning into effortless, natural photos. You’re not posing – you’re just enjoying yourselves, and I’m there to quietly capture it all. The front lawn is super versatile too. I’ve seen it used for lawn games, outdoor bars, even food trucks and vintage ice cream bikes – perfect for adding that fun, personal twist to your day.

Around the back, you’ll find the Edmund Terrace, overlooking the bowling green (yes, it doesn’t get more English than that!). The venue is exclusively yours on your wedding day, meaning no other events or hotel guests - just you and your loved ones in a private haven

They are licensed for civil ceremonies on-site, so you can have everything in one place. There’s a fully equipped catering kitchen for your chosen caterers to use, and a staffed bar available (the house is licensed for alcohol and entertainment). For your guests’ convenience, Antrobus House has its own large private car park on the grounds – ideal since Amesbury town parking can be tricky. You’ll also have use of modern amenities despite the historic shell: high-speed WiFi (great for instant photo sharing!), new restrooms including disabled facilities, and good accessibility on the ground floor.

Best Photo Spots at Antrobus House – My Go-To Locations for Real, Cinematic Moments

One of the first things I do when I arrive at Antrobus House is walk around the grounds and check the light – scouting out all those perfect little corners where the magic happens. This venue has so much to offer visually, so you can already start imagining where your wedding portraits might unfold…

The Front Lawn & Facade

Right after the ceremony, I often take couples out through the main doors for a few quiet minutes and some natural portraits in front of the house. The red-brick facade and crisp white windows give such a timeless backdrop – you get that “Wow, we just got married at a manor house” kind of feeling without even trying.

We’ll do wide shots with the whole building behind you, and then move closer to the lovely wrought-iron gates. There’s even a charming little Antrobus House name plaque – perfect for a confetti toss, a cheeky kiss, or just a fun, relaxed moment while your guests cheer you on.

If it’s a summer wedding, the golden hour light on the front lawn is stunning – soft, warm, and super flattering. And in spring, the flowerbeds come alive with colour, adding a lovely pop around you.
